Do you get seasonal affective disorder? I definitely do! Aptly named “SAD,” symptoms include feeling moody, down, negative, irritable, lacking motivation, and wanting to sleep a lot. Yep, that’s me rn!

Of course all of this is amplified by a global pandemic, increased lockdown, and lack of social safety nets to help ease the anxiety of this moment.

Some things that can help SAD are:
•taking extra vitamin D
•getting outside for at least 20 minutes/day. Sit in the sun, roll up your sleeves and pant legs, get sun on your skin if possible.
•“happy lamps” – my therapist says these help a little
•doing fun things, like reading a good book, taking a bath or relaxing shower, dry skin brushing, yummy skincare products that smell nice
•getting some light exercise daily. My favorites are @essentrics, fascial release with @wit_move, pilates with @ehspilates, walking or hiking. Hit me up if you want links to online classes!
•connecting with friends or family over the phone, zoom, text, etc.
•limiting social media if it leaves you feeling icky
•getting cozy with an electric blanket, space heater, hot herb tea
•action is the antidote to despair, so an act of service to someone else, even just a check-in text to a friend or small donation to a local foodbank might feel nice.
•meditation is usually the last thing I feel like doing when I’m blue, but I really enjoy the group meditations with @headspace to help my brain quiet down
•let yourself feel whatever you’re feeling…

It’s ok to be sad! Some of what makes feeling blue even harder is the sense that you “shouldn’t” be feeling that way. Just notice if those thoughts are coming up. A gentle internal reminder that it’s ok to be sad/mad/down/cranky/blah or any other challenging feeling is ok. There’s a lot to feel sad about these days! Lean into the feeling; you won’t find it bottomless, and you’re not alone.
